Tuning into Kids and Tuning in to Teens were developed by the University of Melbourne to help families, and other settings such as schools, to support kids and young people to manage difficult feelings better. Parents, carers and educators learn skills to teach kids healthy ways of recognising, understanding and acting on feelings- in themselves and others.
These skills are often called ‘emotional intelligence’, and research shows they are really important for children and young people. Kids and young people who build these 'emotional intelligence skills'....
enjoy greater success with making friends and managing conflict with peers
have better concentration, so they are more likely to succeed academically
are more able to self soothe when upset or angry
tend to have fewer illnesses growing up
have more stable and satisfying relationships as adults; and
have greater career success ...emotional intelligence may be a better predictor of academic and career success than IQ!
The courses are suitable for:
parents, carers, mentors and teachers of children and young people who are experiencing the usual ups and downs of growing up,
parents and carers who are supporting children and young people who have a disability, or who are recovering from trauma and difficult experiences.
We get great feedback from parents, carers and those working with children about Tuning in to Kids- those who attend the course report finding the ideas and skills helpful, for themselves, their children and young people, and their family relationships.
The course is run as a series of six two hour long sessions run once per week in a small group (between 6 and 10 participants). The cost is $280pp for the series of six sessions. If cost is a difficulty or concern please don't hesitate to speak to Angela (angelajeanmiddleton@gmail.com). There are a limited number of concession and supported places available in each group.
